To make it convenient for navigators to use Google Maps, the search engine giant has rolled out a new update on the Android platform. The update packs a new Wi-Fi only offline mode, which allows users to download the areas on their Android device, in order to navigate in offline mode.
Google has been testing the Wi-Fi only option since last month. The company aims to allow users with limited data plans to navigate conveniently. Instead of loading the app multiple times while using a data plan, users can simply download certain areas through Wi-Fi only mode, in order to navigate freely without being connected to the internet.
Those who are interested in using the new feature can download the update from Google Play. To activate the new feature, users are required to navigate to the “Settings” option and tap on “Wi-Fi Only.” A pop up message will appear on the display screen informing users that the new feature consumes significantly less data.
Another feature, SD card download, will allow users to save areas within Google Maps on the SD card. Therefore, those who are not subscribed to any data plan can download the maps through Wi-Fi only mode, and navigate easily at any time they want.
Over the past few months, Google has made quite a few efforts to improve the functionality of its Google Maps app. The company recently launched a new feature that allows users in several regions of the world to compare the prices of etaxi and ride-sharing services. To be more specific, users in Indonesia can access Go-JEK prices through the app. Also, users in Asian countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand among others will be able to access Grab prices. The company has also added support for MyTaxi, Gett and Hailo on the app, across several cities in Europe and Israel.
