Just a few hours ago, Niantic released its fifth update for Pokémon GO. The update, 0.33.0, features some minor changes along with one very interesting and somewhat much-needed change. The developers have finally paid attention to the broken “Nearby” system as it has now been completely revamped.
The system has been overhauled, with improved graphics and better functionality. The most noticeable change is that the tracker is now labeled as Sightings and shows Pokémon next to strands of tall grass, which seems something just for show at the moment. However, it’s refreshing to see that at least the developers are doing their best to fix the game.
It’s possible that with the coming updates those strands of grass could actually indicate the Pokémon’s location, and hence, act as a replacement for Footsteps, something that was taken away from the users in the past update. Since the new tracker is still in its beta stage it might work differently for different users.
Here's the entire changelog from Niantic’s official website for Pokémon GO.
- Added a dialog to remind Trainers that they should not play while traveling above a certain speed. Trainers must confirm they are not driving in order to continue playing
- Made improvements to the accuracy of a curveball throw
- Fixed a bug that prevented Nice, Great and Excellent PokéBall throws from awarding appropriate XP bonuses
- Fixed achievements showing incorrect Medal icons
- Enabled the ability for Trainers to change their nickname one time. Please choose your new nickname wisely
- Resolved issues with the battery-saver mode on iOS and re-enabled the feature.
- Added visuals of Team Leaders Candela, Blanche and Spark.
- We’re currently testing a variation of the Nearby Pokémon feature with a subset of users. During this period you may see some variation in the nearby Pokémon UI.
