Seagate has broken the record that Samsung made when it unveiled its 15 terabyte SSD drive in March. The former has demonstrated its latest device as a solution for data centers that require dependable long-term SSD drives. Seagate expects to make the device available to users across the globe by sometime next year.
“This single controller architecture also delivers the lowest cost per gigabyte for flash available today,” said Seagate. “Because of the drive’s flexible architecture, it also provides a pathway for data centres to easily grow from the current 60TB capacity to accommodate 100TB of data or more in the future – and all in the same form factor.”
Considering that the device is aimed at enterprises and data centers, it is safe to assume that it will be priced well above an individual’s price range. Some tech experts believe that a lower price tag on Seagate’s device will have a negative impact on the demand of Samsung’s latest 15 TB SSD drive that costs a whopping $10,000.
In terms of specification, the new SSD drive consists of dual port 12 gigabyte per second SAS interface with a read speed of 1,500 MB per second, and sequential write speed up of 1,000 MB per second. The company claims that the SSD drive can store up to 12,000 movies. Seagate believes that the single-controller architecture of the SSD drive enables it to offer the lowest cost per gigabyte in the flash storage industry till now.
The flexible single controller architecture will make it easy for data centers to increase storage from 60TB to 100 TB in the future, using the same factor. The new SSD drive promises to offer quick accessibility of data to users.
The news has ignited excitement among many Seagate loyalists across the globe. The company enjoys the attention of achieving a commendable feat for now, but industry pundits believe that the SSD drive will attract a relatively smaller number of customers upon launch.
