Independent game developers have been making indie games since the 1970s and the likes Minecraft, World of Goo, Gone Home and The Stanley Parable set milestones which cement a simple fact. Small teams and weird ideas could lead to another game-changer.
Pixel Spill Games is an indie game studio based in London UK and could be making ground for another stellar title that features all of this. Outreach is a game you do not come across often, a walking simulator set in 1980s on a covert Soviet military space station. The game takes a narrative approach and involves uncovering a Cold War conspiracy. As a lone cosmonaut, you explore the deserted space station, searching for the truth behind the disappearance of the crew members and the fate of the craft.
Explorers who endeavor into space to witness the story unfold are cautioned of the perils in a deserted space station by Pixel Spill.
Interacting with the remains of the craft and learning to extract information of its gear and hardware has got to be one of the most exciting aspects of the game. Why? Well, there are no games that feature a theme built around conspiracies involving the Russian space program. It is a subject that rarely sees the light of day in mainstream games and the idea of looking for clues is what makes this title interesting.
The 2015 teaser showcases impressive graphics and has an immersive feel towards gameplay. However, talk of VR possibilities are slim because the lack of gravity gets an average player disoriented and nobody wants to puke in the middle of a session. What Pixel Spill has talked about is the game being cross-platform.
“We're considering porting to consoles if possible, but we don't want to commit to anything just yet. We're only a small studio and don't want to make false promises!”
- Pixel Spill replying to a comment on YouTube.
Outreach is being developed with Unreal Engine 4 and is set to release on Windows and Mac PCs sometime in 2017.
