In its quest to grab a larger market share of the operating system industry, Google plans to release a third OS — dubbed Fuchsia. According to Business Insider, there is no official word from the search giant but the new system — currently under development — appeared as a new project on GitHub.
Unlike Android and Chrome OS, which are based on Linux Kernel, the new OS will be based on Magenta kernel. Sources also claim that the kernel is created to be easily integrated on all types of devices, ranging from blown computers to smartphones, smartwatches and even IoT devices such as the Google Home or the OnHub Router.
GitHub also revealed that Google plans to use its own programming language, Dart. For the user interface, the company will reportedly use Flutter, the open source mobile development framework. The build and templates library shows that the OS has been in development for months, and according to some sources, it’s being tested on some next-gen computers as well.
Analysts have had different opinions about the OS, with some saying that it will be a standalone system. Others claim that it could help Chrome OS and Android “unify in some way.”
This could be done with Fuchsia being as the basis of the upcoming versions of Android and Chrome OS. This means Linux kernel will be ditched while Fuchsia or the Magenta kernel will be used for the other two OS by the company. We believe the latter claim makes more sense since Google might be looking to be less dependent upon third-party resources and shifting to something which is homegrown.
The strategy to unify Chrome OS and Android seems to be underway, as Google recently added the support on Chrome OS for Android apps. While this adds to productivity, it could also be the first step towards merging the two operating systems.
However, as suggested by GitHub, we might never see a public release of the OS, or this might just be another revolutionary project. But all we can do is speculate till there’s an official confirmation on the system.
